Kalano Community Association Inc. is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation, guided by the voices of its members and governed by elected Councillors. Councillors are elected every two years by members of their communities and are responsible for providing leadership, direction and oversight on behalf of Kalano’s members.

What is the role of the Council and Board?

The Council and Board provide leadership, governance, and strategic direction for Kalano. They act in the best interests of members, ensure accountability, and oversee the organisation’s performance and compliance.

How often do the Council and Board meet?

The Council and Board meet on a bi-monthly basis. Additional meetings may be held if a special Council or Board meeting is required.

How are conflicts of interest managed?

Council and Board Members are required to declare any conflicts of interest. These are managed in accordance with Kalano’s governance policies to ensure transparency and integrity in decision-making.

Who can be elected to the Council?

To be eligible for election, a person must be a registered member of Kalano Community Association Inc. and be able to provide 100 points of identification, such as a Birth Certificate, Driver Licence or Proof of Age Card, and Medicare Card. Candidates must be willing and able to obtain the required checks and clearances, including a Director ID, National Police Check, Working with Children Clearance, and NDIS Worker Screening. Support is available to assist with obtaining these requirements. Candidates must also be available to attend bi-monthly Council meetings and cannot be a full-time employee of Kalano Community Association Inc.
